THE CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL (SAKURA)
Sakura is the Japanese term for cherry blossom trees. These trees does not produce fruit. Instead, they bloom with beautiful pink or white flowers every spring. Adding to their magic and mystique, these trees are in full bloom only for a week or two. Cherry blossom trees are an icon of Japan. The flowers symbolize good luck, love, hope, renewal, optimism and human mortality. They remind us how short, beautiful and precious life is – the ephemeral nature of life. This is called hanami. Cherry blossoms symbolize both birth and death, beauty and violence. They are a central motif in the Japanese worship of nature, but they have also historically signified the short but colorful life of the samurai. Sakura emblems also adorned the planes of kamikaze pilots during World War II symbolizing that they would live short but glorious lives.

The Tokyo Tower is a symbol of post war recovery in the center of the city. Built in 1958, and standing 333 meters tall, Tokyo Tower serves as a symbol of Tokyo’s rebirth after World War II. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest tower in the world, surpassing even its inspiration, the Eiffel Tower.
